Volunteers Sought for Ballston Lake Clean Up Day – Saturday, May 1, 2021, 8 AM -10 AM

The Annual Ballston Lake Clean Up Day is set for Saturday, May 1. Volunteers are welcome to join in just by showing up to get their road assignments at the Ballston Lake Fire Department, on Route 146-A between 8 and 10 AM. A new option allows volunteers to preregister and select their road assignment through www.ballstonlake.org. Preregistration is especially recommended for groups to ease congestion at the firehouse and maintain Covid-19 protocols. Scores of local residents, business people, town authorities and local organizations including scout troops, confirmation classes and high school students in need of community service projects for civics class typically volunteer. Masks are required. The event occurs rain or shine.

Clean Up Day is sponsored by the Ballston Lake Improvement Association, Burnt Hills Ballston Lake Business & Professional Association, the Town of Ballston, the Town of Clifton Park and new this year the BH-BL Rotary Club. Stewart’s Shops have donated 100 ice cream cone coupons as a show of appreciation to the volunteers. The coupons will be distributed on a first come first served basis until supplies run out.

The project involves doing a clean sweep of winter trash on local roadways in the hamlet of Ballston Lake and its environs. “Roadside litter is a fact of winter,” said Wes DeVoe, President of the Ballston Lake Improvement Association. “BLIA started Clean UP Day in the mid 1970’s. Aside from the beautification aspect, it serves as an educational initiative creating increased awareness of the environment and hopefully further developing responsible and eco-friendly habits.”

When volunteers finish their assignments, they can put their trash bags in town trucks. The Town of Clifton Park Highway Department will have a truck for trash bags positioned the Ballston Lake Fire House. The Town of Ballston will have a truck for trash bags parked in the town recreation area parking lot on Outlet Road.

Christopher Newell, Immediate Past President of BPA recalls, “I remember always looking forward to Clean Up Day as a kid. It’s grass roots community volunteerism at its best.”
Participants are urged to wear gloves and closed toed shoes. Volunteers can pick up their street assignments, and receive free “safety green” tee shirts, and trash bags from 8 AM through 10 AM at the Ballston Lake Fire House on May 1.
