Volunteering in West Africa

Glenville Rotarian Harry Thornhill’s story begins as one of the first classes of Peace Corp Volunteers. Now, after a career teaching in Shenendehowa, his volunteer spirit has transformed a school in Africa. In 2004, Harry and his wife Joan were discouraged to see African children being taught is such a poorly equipped school. So they took action. Over the years, they helped transform the school from a few rickety clap-board buildings to a 2-story concrete-block structure. Gradually, the Akuffo Tom School added electricity, computers, water and a bus. Harry and Joan visit every other year for volunteer teaching in January to March.  To learn more, they can be reached at 518-399-7758; HarryThornhill@hotmail.com or www.facebook.com/friendsofakuffotomschool/.

Meanwhile, everyone is invited to pull up a chair with Harry Thornhill and a few Niskayuna Rotarians, Tuesday, July 18, 2017 from 7:15 AM to 8:15 AM at the Blue Ribbon Restaurant & Bakery, 1801 State St (Route 5).  Come and be amazed and inspired to see how each one of us can make a difference.
