Virtual New Visions Health Careers Open House planned for Jan. 20

High school students interested in an in-depth, honors-level study program that immerses them in careers in medicine during their senior year are encouraged to attend a virtual open house on Jan. 20.

New Visions: Health Careers is a one-year, honors-level program that turns area hospitals into classrooms for highly motivated, academically successful high school seniors. In the programs, students from across the region learn through traditional methods (lecture, reading, research, writing and focused study), group discussions, internships and rotations. Classes meet daily from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and students are transported to the program by their home school districts.

New Visions: Health Careers classrooms are located at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady and at St. Peters Hospital in Albany and students take part in a variety of rotations in the hospitals as part of their education.

The Jan. 20 open house will run from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Those interested should use the following Google Meet link meet.google.com/utu-hchy-hrq or call in by phone +1 724-418-4479 (PIN: 491061236).

Current New Visions student Caoilfhionn “Kevlin” Boyle praised the program.
“New Visions is good because it allows you to see what you want to do and what you don’t want to do and it gives you a great opportunity to get a feel for what a career actually looks like instead of just reading about it,” Boyle said. “I look forward to bringing those experiences with me to college,” said the Mohonasen senior
.
New Visions graduates credit the program with their success.
“The skills I learned in Health Careers and the experiences I had — I was able to be a part of three live births! — prepared me well for classes at Russell Sage,” said Lauren Szczepaniak, a 2017 graduate. 2018 graduate Emily Jackson, who attended New Visions from the Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School District, said the program cemented her career aspirations for her.
“I learned that I liked being with the patients and being with the doctors and working with kids. I really wasn’t sure prior to that,” Jackson said.

Anyone interested in attending any of the sessions should call the Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School guidance office at 518 862-4816.
