SUNY Schenectady County Community College Students Receive Prestigious Awards

SUNY Schenectady County Community College (SCCC) Culinary Arts major Giovanni Lontoc and Human Services major Stephanie Brackeen were selected to receive the 2017 SUNY Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence for their demonstration of academic excellence with accomplishments in leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, as well as campus involvement. They were recognized in a ceremony held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany on April 5.

Lontoc, from Laguna, Philippines, is a husband and father of two young children and maintains a 3.98 GPA. In addition to attending SUNY SCCC full time, he also ran “Bellaenzo,” a small catering business for which he hired fellow students. Lontoc is now employed as a Sous Chef at Rivers Casino & Resort in Schenectady.

Brackeen, from Phoenix, Ariz., has served her local community in multiple capacities, recruiting for the College’s Veteran’s Club and serving as president and secretary of the Student Volunteer Organization. She graduated in December 2016 with a 3.81 GPA and is now a Therapeutic Recreation Aide at Kingsway Arms Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Schenectady.

The SUNY Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence recognize 256 students annually.

“It is my honor to celebrate the achievements of students who have surpassed SUNY’s highest standards of academic excellence and leadership both on and off campus,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher. “Every student we recognize today has demonstrated a strong commitment to their degree program, home campus, greater community, and much more. Congratulations to all of the students receiving this year’s award.”

“We are very proud of our students at SUNY Schenectady County Community College, as much for their accomplishments as for their hard work,” said Dr. Steady Moono, SUNY SCCC President. “They continue to amaze me each and every day, and I want to congratulate them on their much-deserved recognition.”

On March 30, SUNY SCCC also inducted 36 students into the Phi Theta Kappa honor society during a special candlelight ceremony. The new inductees qualified for the award after completing 15 or more credits at SUNY SCCC and earning a minimum 3.70 GPA.
