SUNY SCCC Announces First-Ever College in the High School Summer Academies (STEAM, Writers)

The SUNY Schenectady County Community College (SUNY SCCC) Division of Math, Science, Technology and Health and the Division of Liberal Arts, along with the College in the High School Program, will offer two summer academies for high school students. One will be dedicated to STEAM studies and the other toward writing, and they will feature intensive, one-week long coursework. This will be the first time SUNY SCCC has offered summer programming of this kind.

The STEAM Academy, short for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math, will immerse students in hands-on experiences and mentoring and networking opportunities, as well as workshops with alumni and current students working in the fields of health, technology and engineering. It will be taught by SUNY SCCC faculty members Dr. Lorena Harris and Dr. Keylon Cheeseman inside the College’s newly-opened, state-of-the-art Biotechnology Laboratory and Research Facility.

The College’s second academy, known as the Young Writers’ Program, will be taught by published author and Assistant Professor Megan Cassidy. This program aims to help high school students develop and refine their creative and critical abilities to become better, more productive writers. Writing workshops will involve free-writing exercises, giving students the opportunity to write stories, poetry, personal narratives and more. Students will also read published short stories and poems which will further serve to inspire their work. Sharing and reflection will play an integral role, but no work will be graded.

“We look forward to teaching students how to put the ‘A’—which stands for Arts—in STEAM,” said Andrew K. Vines, Dean of the Division of Math, Science, Technology and Health at SUNY SCCC. “This is an excellent opportunity for high school students to see how interdisciplinary these fields are, while also getting the opportunity to work with Dr. Lorena Harris and Dr. Keylon Cheeseman, both subject matter experts in their fields.”

“I look forward to meeting an enthusiastic group of students this summer, eager to share their work and grow as writers in a fun and supportive environment,” said Megan Cassidy.

“These academies are an incredible way to keep high school students active this summer academically, while also preparing them for the coming year’s coursework, which is sure to be more challenging,” said Pamela McCall, Director of College and High School Partnerships. “We want students to learn, of course, but we also want them to grow and think in new ways, and that’s what these programs have been designed to achieve.”

The academies are open to rising sophomores, juniors and seniors, as well as high school students graduating this June. The deadline to register is Thursday, June 15.

SUNY SCCC’s College in the High School program partners with 20 area high schools to offer college credit courses to sophomores, juniors and seniors. The program offers a variety of classes in subjects such as Business, Foreign Language, Computers, Math, English, Environmental Science and History.
