Statement by UAlbany President Havidán Rodríguez on the Albany AI Supercomputing Initiative

The $75 million for the Albany AI Supercomputing Initiative included in the state budget will be transformational for the University at Albany. This multifaceted project will reshape our university, the Capital Region and New York. Through Albany AI, UAlbany will work with government, educational and industry partners to dramatically expand the artificial intelligence supercomputing resources available in New York for teaching and research well beyond traditional STEM applications, including the arts and humanities.

Through our signature research strengths in cybersecurity, climate science, health sciences and emergency preparedness, UAlbany is uniquely positioned to leverage this computing power to tackle some of society’s biggest challenges – from post-pandemic health data analytics to K-12 education, robotic surgery, predicting severe weather associated with climate change and developing AI systems worthy of human trust.

I am profoundly grateful to Governor Hochul, Senators Neil Breslin and Michelle Hinchey and Assemblymembers Pat Fahy and John McDonald for delivering on their commitment to ensure UAlbany and SUNY can continue to expand the frontiers of human knowledge and innovation.

Together with Albany AI, the proposed reunification of UAlbany and the College of Nanoscale Science & Engineering will propel Upstate New York to the forefront of next-generation chip design. Access to these new AI clusters, and the opportunity to engage scientists, researchers, and students, will cultivate an innovation and investment ecosystem that will strengthen the Upstate economy and educate the AI-savvy workforce New York needs. And as one of the most diverse research institutions in the United States, UAlbany will not only help Governor Hochul realize her vision to make SUNY the best public university system in the nation—we will also continue to serve as an engine of social mobility that offers life-changing opportunities to all New Yorkers.
