Sometimes Learning Is All Fun and Games: Duo Creates Video Game they Will Launch Next Week in Syracuse

A pair of Capital Region high school students have created a new video game and will officially launch it next week at a state competition in Syracuse.

Timothy Jagneaux of Shenendehowa and Cole Maughan of Cobleskill-Richmondville have created Forsaken Alloy, an action game that they will debut at the New York State SkillsUSA competition next Thursday in Syracuse. If the students win the state competition, they advance to nationals in Kentucky in June.

Jagneaux and Maughan are seniors in the Game Design and Implementation Program offered by Capital Region BOCES at the Center for Advanced Technology at Mohonasen.

They have spent weeks creating the animation and coding necessary to create an actual video game and even re-programmed an Xbox controller to use on the game.

“Right now we are just trying to implement the animation beyond the simple animation we have right now,” said Jagneaux.

Maughan said the game is modeled after Darksiders, a game marketed by Vigil Games, and one of his favorites. The goal of Forsaken Alloy is for antagonist to survive after he was gifted an alloy that had been forsaken by the tribes of their world, but is now being hunted. The player is expected to traverse multiple levels to keep his Alloy from falling into the wrong hands.

The duo is creating a video trailer to market the video game and will display the trailer and the game during the competition. They will also field questions and explain the coding, animation and art work that was put into creating it.

“It has been a lot of fun. A great learning experience,” said Maughan. “It gives you a feel for how the industry works.”

Teacher Darryl Nunn said the students are considering taking the game to the next level and making it available in App Stores.
