From Soap Box Derby to Expressive Arts Exhibit, Children Show Their Stuff

If there’s one thing that most children at St. Catherine’s have in common, it is this: their lives have been filled with struggles and challenges. Some know what it is like to be homeless. Others understand the fear of being abused by a loved one. Others have learned how to cope with constant disruption in their lives, moving from home to home. Our children have faced challenges that most children will never know.

St. Catherine’s Center for Children strives to offer a therapeutic environment that helps children understand and cope with emotional trauma. Part of that program is to encourage participation in community activities.

And that’s just what’s happening in June. We have two events on our calendar which will offer our children the opportunity to display their talents!

On Saturday, June 10, two of St. Catherine’s children will be racing cars in the Capital Region Soap Box Derby in Schenectady. The derby is a qualifying race for the Soap Box Derby World Championship in Akron, Ohio in July. Contestants will be racing down a hill on Franklin Street in Schenectady, and two St. Catherine’s children, a boy and a girl, are looking forward to the race with great anticipation. Race heats are expected to begin at approximately 8 am, and spectators are encouraged to come out and cheer their favorite drivers on.

From the world of sports to the world of arts, The Albany Barn will host an exhibit of art work created by some of our children on Tuesday, June 13 at 46-48 N. Swan Street in Albany. The exhibit will run from 5-7 pm on Stage 1 of the Albany Barn Arts Center.

The exhibit will include original artwork created by children in our Expressive Arts Therapy program, which encourages children to use art as a medium to express their feelings and experiences. The exhibit is open to the public, and refreshments will be served. Contact Adam Rossi at 518-453-6756 (email arossi@st-cath.org) if you would like to be included on the guest list.
