October 30, 2017Schenectady Senior Center to open
In a joint venture between public and private entities, a new Schenectady Senior Center will open on November 14, 2017. Schenectady City Councilman Ed Kosiur will introduce the new Center at a Pre-Opening on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 from 10:00 AM to 12 Noon.
Councilman Kosiur explained, “This new Schenectady Senior Center will offer senior residents a place to come together to enjoy programs, activities, socialization and lunch two days a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays. The City secured a federal grant and is partnering with the Ancient Order of Hibernians and Kingsway Community to make this Senior Center a reality. Membership to the Senior Center is free.”
Kosiur continued, “With Kingsway’s 42 years of experience providing high quality care and services for seniors, and the Ancient Order of Hibernian’s easy access building on State Street, it is a suitable, convenient and ideal partnership that will benefit Schenectady’s seniors. We are also inviting Schenectady seniors to participate in this venture by responding to our survey to let us know what kinds of activities and programing they would like to see offered. This survey is available at the City’s website, www.cityofschenectady.com as well as in local shops and places of worship. Seniors are invited to visit the Schenectady Senior Center at the Ancient Order of Hibernian building at 1748 State Street, Schenectady.”
Some of the programs that will be offered at the new Schenectady Senior Center include: MVP Living Well programs, health and wellness activities/clinics, literature club, monthly blood pressure clinics, informational presentations, movies, and nutrition classes.
President/CEO of Kingsway Community, Michael McPartlon, commented, “Kingsway is pleased to be a part of this joint effort to bring a wide range of activities and programs to our neighbors. Our talented staff have a multitude of ideas and exciting programs that will engage seniors and provide four hours a day each Tuesday and Thursday from 10 AM to 2 PM, of comraderie and social activities. Being involved with this Senior Center allows us to give back to our community in a way that expresses our commitment and dedication to the senior population that we have served for 42 years.” John Ericson, President of the Ancient Order of Hibernians JFK Division #1 Inc. Corporate Board, said “AOH is looking forward to having our building used for the Schenectady Senior Center. Having a dedicated entrance, a large kitchen with a volunteer crew, and being on the bus route should make AOH a convenient site for the Senior Center.”
Mayor Gary McCarthy, commented, “I am happy to see so many talented people coming together to bring to life this Senior Center. After a ten year absence, the City of Schenectady will have a place for our seniors to gather, enjoy friends, and have a nutritious lunch at a nominal fee. I am a life-long Hibernian and this kind of program is in line with our mission of serving the community. Of course, I am also thrilled that Kingsway Community, with its long and proud history of serving seniors, is working with us in this public-private partnership.”
