The Salvation Army Celebrates National Donut Day Friday, June 2, 2017

The Salvation Army will celebrate National Donut Day, a day first established by The Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938. To celebrate the day, The Salvation Army in both Albany and Saratoga Springs, are hosting donut giveaways and asking those who enjoy a donut on National Donut Day to share a picture to their social media profiles using #GivingIsSweet.

The donut giveaways will take place from 10 a.m. to Noon on Broadway, outside of Adirondack Trust Company, 473 Broadway. Donuts donated by Dunkin’ Donuts and BOCES. “Donut Lassies” will also be making donuts on site.  Before then, they will be delivering donuts to veterans at the VA Clinic in Clifton Park.

In Albany, The Salvation Army will be distributing donuts from its mobile feeding van at Empire State Plaza, Upper Concourse near the Farmer’s Market, starting at noon.

At both locations, those who stopped by will receive an “I donut-ed today” sticker.

Held annually on the first Friday of June, this year’s National Donut Day marks 100 years since The Salvation Army’s “Donut Lassies” served the delicious treats to American soldiers on the front lines during World War I. The Salvation Army Donut Lassies are often credited with popularizing the sweet treat in the United States when the troops returned home from war. The donut now serves as a symbol of the services and comfort.
