Hard-wired for a Solid Electrical Future

Capital Region BOCES electrical trades junior Mike Kerr prepares wires for an electrical outlet during class recently at the Career and Technical School in Albany. Kerr, who attends Capital Region BOCES from the Cohoes City School District, is one of approximately 70 students enrolled in the program.

Kerr said he chose the program because “I heard the electrical field was a good field with lots of work that pays well so I chose Capital Region BOCES to learn about it.”

“I love what I am learning,” he added.

Kerr is correct with his understanding of careers in the electrical field with federal labor officials projecting near double digit job growth in the coming decade and electricians earning a median annual salary of $52,720 in 2016.

Many of Capital Region BOCES electrical trades students go on to Hudson Valley Community College to expand their knowledge of the industry upon graduation, though some go straight to work with numerous area businesses and unions who partner with the program.
