January 14, 2016Niskayuna Co-op Partners with SICM to Collect Goods for Emergency Food Pantry
Niskayuna Co-op is partnering with Schenectady Inner City Ministry (SICM) to collect goods to benefit those who do not always have the resources to acquire these needed items. From now through the end of February, the Co-op will be collecting the items listed below, as these are some of the toughest months for individuals living on a limited budget. Items may be dropped off anytime at the store during their open hours (8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily), or at the SICM pantry, located at 839 Albany Street in Schenectady, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Community members on assistance, in most cases, are not able to use their benefits to purchase sanitary and grooming products, diapers, basic cleaning supplies or pet food for their beloved companions. The Niskayuna Co-op hopes to help fill in the gaps for those in need.
The Emergency Food Program, directed by Shennan Jarboe, is located at 839 Albany Street, and is for any Schenectady County resident needing temporary or emergency food. The Pantry is open M-W-Th-F, 9:00 am -11:30am. On average, 90 families are served each day the Pantry is open. Mass Distribution is the last Thursday of each month, and runs from 8:30 to 11:30am. ID’s are required for every family member for each visit (limited to once per month). In 2014, the pantry served 50,119 individuals, including 18,739 children. The equivalent of 600,876 meals were served in 2014.
Schenectady Inner City Ministry (SICM) is a faith-based coalition of 50 congregations founded in 1967 for programs of joint social service and social justice. SICM is a non-sectarian organization. SICM runs a host of programs serving the wider Schenectady community, including the SICM Food Program and Food Pantry, the Schenectady Damien Center, Summer Youth Meals and Mobile Meals, Schenectady County Embraces Diversity, a summer youth camp with Camp Fowler, Food Security initiatives, and others.
