Ever wonder what creates that harp like sound in some of the Beatles songs? Did you know Paraguay’s national instrument is the harp? How many strings does a modern “concert” harp have? Do you know where the harp originated?

These and many more questions about harps can be answered when you join harp duo Lilac 94 for Explore! Harp Around the World. Experience a trip around the world with the harps of different cultures and enjoy the music associated with them. In this engaging program, suitable for all ages, harpists Christina Brier and Kathryn Sloat guide your travels through Ireland, Europe, South America, Japan, Israel, South Africa, India, and the United States with their music, visuals, answers to your questions, and a chance to make music of your own.

About Lilac 94 – http://www.lilac94.com/

“Christina Brier and Kathryn Sloat of Lilac 94 aren’t your grandmother’s harpists.” –Star News.

Lilac 94 is a harp duo dedicated to performing new and previously undiscovered music and exploring creative ways of using the harp. Christina and Kate have played their music in all kinds of venues, from schools and retirement homes to Eastman School of Music’s Hatch Hall and the Milwaukee Art Museum. In the summer of 2015 the duo presented a program of twenty-first century works for two harps at the American Harp Society’s Summer Institute in Logan, Utah. Most recently, they toured the Midwest performing their program of harp duos by living composers. Christina and Kate began playing together in their first semester as masters students at the Eastman School of Music, and formed Lilac 94 just before their graduation in May 2013. They chose their name to reflect their origins in Rochester, New York – the lilac is the flower of the city, and they have a total of 94 strings between their two harps.

As touring musicians, Christina and Kathryn always try to create a connection to the community they are performing in.  On January 27 from 5-9 PM (The day before Harp Around the World), they will be performing at the February Troy Night Out at the Troy Pop Up Art Show.   Hosted by Tori Does Fine Art at 33 Second Street in downtown Troy, the Troy Pop Up Art Shows have become “a favorite” of Troy Night out. This January Pop Up Art celebrates the first anniversary of showcasing local artists, one pop up show at a time. Lilac 94 will be strumming and plucking multiple strings at a time as part of the celebration! Come enjoy an evening mixing with local artists, those who love art, and music-making by Lilac 94.

Both these events are free and open to the public, no tickets are needed.    More information on this and upcoming programs is available at www.troymusichall.org.
