Daughters of Sarah Senior Community Appoints Three New Staff

Daughters of Sarah Senior Community is pleased to announce the appointment of Leslie Brocious-Pliss as the Director or Resident Life at the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center, Ruth Schulman as the Director of Philanthropy and Community Engagement, and Talya Shulman as the Development Associate for the Senior Community’s Foundation.

Leslie Brocious-Pliss.1Brocious-Pliss has focused her career in healthcare in both acute and long-term care settings.  Most recently, she was the Social Services Director at Colonie Manor Assisted Living.  Prior to that, Brocious-Pliss worked at the Guilderland Center Nursing Home as the Director of Resident and Family Services, and as a Social Worker at Albany Medical Center.  As the Director of Resident Life at Daughters of Sarah, and a member of the Senior Management Team, Brocious-Pliss is responsible for supervising the social workers, the social services and recreation departments, spiritual services and their directors.  “I feel fortunate to be part of the outstanding team that provides quality care and services to residents of the nursing center,” commented Brocious-Pliss.  She holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University at Albany, and lives in Delmar with her husband and children.

Ruth Schulman.2Daughters of Sarah Senior Community appointed Ruth Schulman as the Director of Philanthropy and Community Engagement, and as a member of the Senior Management Team. Schulman has worked for a number of non-profits in the Capital Region for 20 years as their director of development, marketing and program development, and has served on several community boards of directors.  Schulman focused her career on working with small non-profits and helped them build sustaining fundraising and marketing programs.   Throughout her career, she worked for several organizations including the Anti-Defamation League, the Jewish Federation of Northeastern NY, Equinox, the Animal Protective Foundation, UAlbany’s School of Education, and Gilda’s Club.  Schulman also served as the executive director for the Northeast String Orchestra.  Shifting her career slightly, Schulman most recently worked for First New York Federal Credit Union where she taught financial literacy in area schools and businesses, and launched an in-school banking program for elementary and middle school students.  She has also volunteered for several area non-profits, including the Capital District YMCA- Clifton Park, Concerned for the Hungry, Schenectady City School District Educational Foundation, Association of Fundraising Professionals, and Women in Development.  She serves as an Ambassador for the Capital Region Chamber of Commerce and is a founding member of the Women’s Community Leadership Network in Schenectady.  “I have always worked for an organization that makes a significant impact on the lives of those I care about most.  I look forward to working with the leadership of our community to help provide the most important and meaningful service possible –outstanding care for our elderly,“ commented Schulman.  She resides in Clifton Park with her husband, Michael.

Talya ShulmanTalya Shulman has joined the staff at Daughters of Sarah Senior Community after being a volunteer there for many years.  Shulman was appointed as the Development Associate.  She has been working with our community’s non-profit organizations and most recently was the Development Assistant at Unity House of Troy, Inc. Shulman is also the Youth Advisor for the Albany chapter of United Synagogue Youth, a Conservative Jewish teen youth group which focuses on leadership and community outreach. Prior to that she was the Public Policy Intern for the Preservation League of New York State where her interest in fundraising started.  Shulman currently serves on the board of directors for the Interfaith Center at UAlbany, and is a member of the SPAC Junior Committee and the Public Relations Committee for Women In Development.  At Daughters of Sarah, Shulman is responsible for the internal management of the fundraising, and solicitations that support the Annual Fund, event planning and marketing activities.  “I am happy to have joined the staff at Daughters of Sarah – an organization that I know well and one that plays a positive role in caring for our senior community,” stated Shulman. She holds an Integrated Marketing Communications degree from Ithaca College and is Blackbaud certified in Raiser’s Edge software.  Shulman resides in Cohoes with her fiancé, Alan.
