Brown School Creates the “Little Free Library” To Provide the Gift of Reading to the Community

Brown School, which serves children nursery through grade eight, is celebrating the creation of their “Little Free Library” which is now open to the community.

The library was installed and dedicated to Cynthia Hoffman a long-time librarian for the school who retired in June.

For a number of years Hoffman would notice all the neighborhood children walking near Brown School. The school is located in a residential area close to Paige Elementary in Schenectady, NY. She dreamed of creating a free library where both those in the community and at Brown School could visit and borrow books.

A group of students and staff at the school decided to bring her dream to life. They held a bottle drive, a plant sale and a bake sale to raise money to erect the library that currently sits in front of Brown School on Corlaer Avenue. The students also took time to research design options and assist with the construction.

The books contained within the library are for children infants through fifth grade. Brown School is registered on the international “Little Free Library” website for all to find. http://www.littlefreelibrary.org

Head of School Patti Vitale was touched by the enthusiasm behind this endeavor. “So many people came together to not only support this project but to see it through to completion. As I continually express, we place a great emphasis on teaching our children the importance of reaching out to the community that surrounds them. This is an example of a meaningful way to connect to others through a love of reading.”

The school hosted a dedication ceremony for the library and honored Cynthia Hoffman for being the inspiration behind it.
