Adult Nursing Student Praises BOCES for Quick Switch to Online Learning

A mom of four who worked as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), she decided last year that it was time to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse so she left her job and enrolled in the Capital Region BOCES Adult Practical Nursing program.

Then the March shutdown of all school activities across the United States occurred as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and her life took another sharp turn to one of an online nursing student.

While some students and institution across the country struggled to adapt the nation’s new reality that was not the case for either Bell or Capital Region BOCES.

“They did a great job getting this up and running so quickly,” said Bell. “I have two kids home from college and it wasn’t as quick for them.”

Bell is one of the 190 adult nursing students transitioned from hands-on and in-class instruction to distance learning the week of March 16. The full-time students like Bell were on-line learning within two days of the switch.

“Everybody is working really hard, it was amazing how quickly it switched,” she said.
