Capital Region BOCES Helps Healthcare Facilities Meet Their Workforce Needs

Nine local healthcare providers turned to Capital Region BOCES on Tuesday to find their workforce of today and tomorrow.

The rehabilitation and nursing homes, as well as assisted living and travelling service providers recruited high school and adult students from the Two-Year Sequence of Health Careers program, as well as the Adult Practical Nursing and Certified Nurse Assistant/ Home Health Aide/Nurse Assistant (CNA/HHA/NA) Aide programs during a career fair at the Career and Technical School, Albany Campus.

“These events are so helpful in getting people to make connections and even encouraging students to go on and get their LPN,” said Andrea Hewitt, a recruiter for Teresian House.

The career fair was the first of several Capital Region BOCES will host in the coming months for students in all programs. The next event to match employers with students is scheduled for March 30 at the Career and Technical School, Schoharie Campus.

During Tuesday’s event, students from the Albany Campus made numerous connections, submitted applications and scheduled future appointments with the employers.

“It’s a great event. I hope that I get a job that suits me,” said Winsome Miller, an Adult CNA/HHA/NA student from Albany.

“It’s amazing, I am just so happy. As soon as I graduate, I want to get a job and work awhile and gain experience and then go to college for nursing, because I think the experience will make college that much easier,” added Lisel Walters, a senior from Schenectady in the Two-Year Sequence of Health Careers program.

Employers said they know BOCES produces well-rounded employees that benefit their institutions.

“I have so many LPNs from BOCES and they work out so well,” said Sabrina Poventud of Kingsway Community.

“We hired three people last year from the job fair and they are magnificent. Wonderful workers who were well prepared for the workforce when they graduated from BOCES,” added Cherie Bruno of Pine Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
