March 30, 2021Capital Region BOCES Teen Earns Statewide Leadership Award
A Capital Region BOCES senior who aspires to a career in the automotive trades is the recipient of a leadership scholarship presented by career and technical school leaders from across the state.
Destiny Honsinger attends the Career & Technical School Automotive Trades Technology program on the Schoharie Campus from Cobleskill-Richmondville High School. She is the recipient of the Thomas Olivo Leadership Award for Zone 3 by The Association of Career and Technical Education Administrators (ACTEA). The $500 award recognizes students who demonstrate leadership abilities while also participating in a career and technical school organization, such as SkillsUSA.
Honsinger is a member of SkillsUSA and current serves as its treasurer. Teacher Randy Barber said she is also part of the Future Business Leaders of America organization, has perfect attendance and earned high honors academically and has received numerous education awards, as well as been active in community service. “She is a great student,” he added. “She is a very conscientious workers and worries about getting the job done right the first time. She has become one of my go-to students in the class.”
Capital Region BOCES Business Liaison Nancy Liddle said Honsinger epitomizes what it means to be a student leader. “She is always willing to help others. She is a true leader in the classroom and out,” said Liddle. Honsinger will attend SUNY Delhi in the fall in pursuit of a degree in automotive technology. Honsinger did not pursue a typical career path into the automotive field. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do going into my junior year and my mother told me I had to start thinking about college, so I looked at the trades and found I liked automobiles,” she said. “I love BOCES because you are doing things, you are working on stuff and working with others and the teacher isn’t hovering over you,” Honsinger said. “You are learning valuable skills.”
