A Capital Region BOCES student is one of 24 high school students from New York State nominated this year as a Presidential Scholar by the New York State Education Department.
Aspiring actress Sam Dell’Acqua of Guilderland, a senior in the Entertainment Tech program, is nominated in the Career and Technical Education category for the national award, which honors the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors.
About 160 finalists will be announced in May.
“It’s very cool to be nominated. I wasn’t expecting it,” she said during a break from set construction in the Entertainment Tech classroom at the Center for Advanced Technology at Mohonasen.
Dell’Acqua has performed for years in productions in the Guilderland Central School District and when not performing, has been a part of the stage crew. In the Entertainment Tech program, she has worked on set designs for Mohonasen High hSchool productions and worked backstage at Proctors Theatre, learning from experts who were staging productions of Anastasia and The Color Purple.
“Proctors was amazing, getting to see and learn from national experts. I’ve also got to meet with the local leaders of theatre, which has been great,” Dell’Acqua said.
As to her future, Dell’Acqua has applied to numerous colleges and hopes to enroll in New York City.
“BOCES has prepared me very well for my future. I have been able to get my name out there and meet people in the industry … and BOCES has allowed me to see theatre from a different perspective,” she said. “It’s been a great experience.”
