August 1, 2018St. Catherine’s Youth Competes in All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron
A youth in St. Catherine’s Residential program enjoyed the adventure of a lifetime in July when he traveled to Akron,Ohio to compete in the 81st All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship. He qualified for the national competition after placing in the regional Derby held in Schenectady in early June.
Our Soap Box Derby racer, along with his brother and two St. Catherine’s staff members, spent an exciting week in Akron. He carried the New York Region 9 Derby Flag in the opening ceremony parade, traded pins with other racers from around the country, and tuned-up his car for the big race! And when he wasn’t working, there was time for fun. He enjoyed a day at Cedar Point Amusement Park, the Roller Coaster Capital of the World!
On race day, July 21, our Derby representative experienced the thrill of hearing the roar of the crowd as his brother and St. Catherine’s staff cheered him on. He didn’t leave Akron with a trophy, but he did collect memories that will last a lifetime.
The All-American Soap Box Derby features gravity racers–cars without motors–that race downhill. The first national Derby was held in 1934. Soap Box Derby racing has taught generations of youth the value of sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership and perseverance, lessons not lost on our participant.
Thanks to everyone who helped make the trip to Akron possible: agency staff, Capital District Soap Box Derby organizers, and other friends and supporters of St. Catherine’s who cheered our racer on. A special thank you to car sponsors, including Adirondack Athletic Club, Hinman Straub PC, Marini Homes, and SCube Inc. We appreciate your support!
