Preferred Foundation Partners with the Norwich YMCA to Sponsor a Safety Around Water Program

The Preferred Foundation, a corporate giving entity of Preferred Mutual Insurance Company (“Preferred Mutual”), is partnering with the Norwich YMCA to sponsor a Safety Around Water program for children in Chenango County in Pre-K through second grade.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 1 to 14 years, and the fifth leading cause for people of all ages. However, formal swim lessons can significantly reduce the likelihood of drowning, and Preferred Mutual advocates that education is the first step in prevention. Preferred Mutual’s and the Norwich YMCA’s Safety Around Water program will teach kids water safety and basic swimming skills that help reduce the risk of drowning and build confidence in and around water.

The program consists of a five-lesson course for one week from Monday, June 26, to Friday, June 30, and is available at no cost to children in Chenango County in Pre-K through second grade. Each lesson will be 30 minutes in duration, and there are four varying class times available to register for including: 9:30-10 a.m., 10-10:30 a.m., 5-5:30 p.m. or 5:30-6 p.m. Participants may choose only one session time slot, which will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Preferred Mutual is hosting a “Sign-Up Saturday” at the Norwich YMCA on Saturday, June 17, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., in which eligible child(ren) may be registered for the Safety Around Water program at the Preferred Mutual booth in the lobby. Norwich YMCA is located at 68 North Broad Street, Norwich, NY 13815.
