Second Grade Class to Benefit from Technology Gift on Manufacturing Day

On Friday, October 7 at 11 a.m., SI Group, a leading global developer and manufacturer of chemical intermediates, specialty resins, and solutions, presented an iPad Pro and other gifts to the winning class of a STEM raffle. SI Group returned as a sponsor for the recent Back-to-School Expo, which took place on September 17 at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany. In celebration of the company’s sixth year sponsoring the event, children entered into a raffle to win an iPad Pro for their school’s science class. The winning student is second grader Sye’Novia Brown of Henry Johnson Charter School in Albany.

“We are grateful to SI Group for making this exciting technology available to the students at our school. The new tool is sure to generate excitement, as well as encourage student interest, and promote the importance of STEM,” said Tiffani B. Curtis, Ed.D., Principal at Henry Johnson Charter School. “STEM literacy is about providing students with a sound understanding of modern science, to help prepare them for future professions in problem-solving, like engineering and manufacturing.”

“At SI Group, we believe that interactive learning experiences ignite curiosity and cultivate exploration,” said Tara Morgan, Public Relations & Communications Manager for SI Group. “Essential to inspiring the next generation of STEM innovators is access to technology at an early age. Today is Manufacturing Day, a celebration of modern manufacturing, of which technology is an essential component. Students prepared with a robust STEM curriculum and access to technology will be well-prepared to drive future growth and innovation in U.S. manufacturing.”

The Back-to-School Expo is one of the company’s ongoing efforts to provide STEM-related program support in the Capital Region. SI Group has a permanent exhibit at miSci (the Museum of Innovation and Science) called Smart Chemistry, which educates children about the wonders of chemistry. Additionally, the company funds a portable chemistry display for local outreach programs, including school classroom visits and auditorium displays. In March, SI Group sponsored the Capital Region Science & Engineering Fair, held at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where 186 local students showcased their STEM acumen. SI Group is a sponsor of the 2016 National Chemistry Week event at the New York State Museum, taking place next week on October 15. The company’s booth will be staffed with SI Group chemists who will conduct a number of science experiments with families.
