The Academy for Character Education at Sage Seeks to Raise Awareness Through Statewide Anti-Bullying Initiative

To raise awareness during National Bullying Awareness Month, The Academy for Character Education at The Sage Colleges has launched the “One Can Count” campaign. The academy is issuing a statewide call for action uniting students, families and communities to take their efforts to prevent bullying to another level.

On October 21, The Academy for Character Education is inviting every elementary school in New York State to encourage teachers, parents or other members of the educational community to read the children’s book One, by Kathryn Otoshi to their students. In conjunction with the reading, the academy is encouraging the schools to lead a discussion about diversity, acceptance, and respect. Resources can be found at onecancount.com.

By setting aside one day to put the issue of bullying front and center, The Academy for Character Education is hoping the initiative will help adults and students to realize the power they have as individuals to influence others to stop bullying and encourage them to take an active role in creating a positive environment in their schools.

Kathryn Otoshi is an author and illustrator of children’s books who lives in the San Francisco Bay area. In addition to authoring books, Otoshi works at Robert Zemecki’s award-winning film company, Imagemovers Digital (Monster House, Polar Express). She visited Sage earlier this month to kick off the initiative with a lecture and book signing.
