SUNY Schenectady County Community College to offer Two New Programs This Fall

Students can now enroll in two new programs for the first time this fall at SUNY SCCC, the Liberal Arts: Humanities and Social Sciences Sociology concentration and the Digital Music and Beat Production certificate program.

The new Liberal Arts: Sociology concentration, part of the Liberal Arts: Humanities and Social Sciences A.A. degree program, is ideal for students who want to transfer on for their bachelor’s in Sociology or related field. It prepares students for academic success and satisfies the SUNY Transfer Pathway, thereby providing students with seamless transfer, as a junior, into a four-year SUNY college or university.

By offering courses that reflect a diverse set of global and cultural perspectives, the program expects students to explore and reflect on human endeavors in the context of nature and society. Also, students in the new Sociology concentration will have opportunities to participate in service learning, a teaching/learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, promote civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Graduates may continue their education and/or pursue careers in a variety of fields including: social welfare; education; public health; public policy and management; research; and political science.

“The new Sociology concentration is a great choice for students who are interested in a career in human services or public policy,” said Dr. Moira Maguire, Dean of the Division of Liberal Arts. “The SUNY Transfer Pathway ensures seamless transfer to four-year SUNY schools and we also have articulation agreements with a number of private schools. Sociology is a popular choice for many college students, and we are excited to be able to offer this option to SCCC students.”

Digital music environments are becoming increasingly important in broadcast media, recording studios, and music editing environments and the new Digital Music and Beat Production certificate is designed for students who want to obtain entry level positions in the industry. Careers in digital audio media can include gaming and other media audio production, broadcast production and editing, digital performance, and audio/music recording.

Students in the new program will study digital sound production, editing, with special emphasis on use of pre-existing materials/sampling, composition of original music, recording sound, and proper use of industry software and equipment. They will develop composition and beat-making skills by synthesizing original sounds and using recording techniques to blend in live instruments. Students will also analyze modern beats and replicate and expand upon techniques used by popular music producers.

“The SUNY SCCC School of Music is excited to offer this new cutting-edge program,” said Dr. William Meckley, Dean of the School of Music. “The Digital Music and Beat Production certificate will be an excellent vehicle for those students who want to explore the creative and technical sides of modern digital-based music. The fact that no audition is required will also provide access to all that are interested.”
