New Technology Will ‘Heat Up’ the Learning at Capital Region BOCES

Students moving into the new, state-of-the-art Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School, Albany Campus will have copious amounts of new technology to utilize and prepare them for the workforce.

Among the new equipment and technology that will heat up the learning for students are refrigeration and heat pump trainers that students pursuing a career in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) will use.

HVAC/R teacher Tim Duane said the program’s students will benefit from the trainers because “they can be configured to simulate problems they will face as HVAC/R technicians” and “allow students to observe and better understand the conditions inside a refrigeration system.”

“The new equipment will add to my instruction by being able to demonstrate without the use of video or textbook,” Duane stated.

There were approximately three dozen students enrolled in the two-year program during the 2021-22 school year. The program gives students a solid career foundation in the HVAC/R industry. In a state-of-the-art classroom, students learn about ventilation, piping, refrigerants and refrigeration, furnaces and boilers. Upon completion of the program, students have the technical and employability skills employers seek.

The Career and Technical School at 925 Watervliet-Shaker Road in Albany is opening in August. The new campus is outfitted with modern labs and learning spaces to prepare students and adults for current and future industry needs, is scheduled to open in the coming weeks.
