October 4, 2017Lower School Holds Hurricane Harvey Supply Drive
The Lower School Community Service Club at The Doane Stuart School has been busy. Over the last two weeks, club members have collected school supplies to send Hurricane Harvey victims in Houston, Texas. Hear from Second Grade Teacher Brittany Garrison on how our lower school students are living one part of our mission – educating to social responsibility – by helping other children impacted by the storm.
After learning about how Hurricane Harvey caused devastation to many children in Houston, Texas, the LS Community Service Club, wanted to help. In trying to decide how to help, the club decided that they wanted to have a school supply drive to collect items for students who were displaced from their schools or whose school supplies had been damaged from the water.
3rd Grader Keane O’Leary of Albany, and 2nd Graders Lucy Neidl of Albany and Cora Harbeck of Rensselaer discussed the best ways to have a successful drive, created posters, helped with the wording for the flyers to be sent home and presented their request at a Lower School Assembly. For about ten days, the students of the Lower School donated brand new school supplies to be sent to Houston. One Lower School student did extra chores to raise money to help buy donations.
After the donations came in, the club sorted and packaged the school supplies to prepare them for shipping. In all, just under 80 lbs of school supplies were donated. (Thanks to a donation from the Parents Association for shipping) Three large boxes filled with notebooks, crayons, pencils, glue sticks, folders, rulers, and scissors are currently on their way to Houston Independent School District.
