May 8, 2020Food Distribution in Albany, NY on 5/11
As the COVID-19 crisis continues, more residents in the Greater Capital Region are facing layoffs and furloughs, and many are experiencing food insecurity for the first time.
On Monday, May 11, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany and the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York are teaming up to host a mass food distribution in the City of Albany. The food distribution is a part of Catholic Charities’ mobile outreach initiative, CC MOVE, and is an effort to provide supplemental and emergency food at a time of when many are struggling.
Food items provided by the Regional Food Bank will be pre-packaged by staff and volunteers, and distribution will begin in the parking lot of Pastoral Center at 9:30 AM. In order to maintain appropriate safety and social distancing, there will be two distribution lines: a drive-through line, and a walk-in line. Walkers can enter the lot through the North Main entrance, while drivers are asked to use the entrance on Western Ave. Due to traffic concerns, guests are asked not to arrive prior to the 9:30 start time.
Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany will be on site at 8:00 AM to provide a blessing and to help with the distribution of food to community members.
Catholic Charities served over 1300 individuals across 435 households at its most recent food distribution in Albany on April 16. They expect to see a similar need on Monday.
