A ‘Chill’ Chinchilla Prepares for a Manicure at Capital Region BOCES

A ‘chill’ chinchilla gets ready for his manicure at the hands of Capital Region BOCES Bryanna Jacob last week. Jacob is a student in the Pet-Tech Program on the Albany Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School campus and is learning how to professionally care for a variety of animals,  ranging from cats and dogs to lizards, chinchillas, bunnies and more.

Led by veteran teacher Helen Thompson who has experience not only in the classroom, but as a therapy dog handler, dog groomer and horseback riding instructor, Pet Tech students learn basic care skills for animals, including grooming, washing and best practices for boarding. Students also learn about customer service, written and spoken communication, office and computer skills, phone etiquette, budgeting and money management, inventory and ordering, advertising, basic accounting and business math.

Approximately two dozen students are enrolled in the program, which is being offered for the first time at Capital Region BOCES.
