May 4, 2018YWCA of the Greater Capital Region Celebrates The 100th Anniversary of Their Building
YWCA-GCR has been in Troy, NY for 135 years providing women and women with children the hope that is the start of positive change. 100 years ago on May 8, 1918 the doors at 21 First Street opened to provide safe, affordable and supportive housing, and services and programs that so many women count on every day. This building has housed thousands of single women for the entire 100 years, families for more than 20 years, and we look to continue being a source of hope and empowerment for generations to come. On May 8, 2018, we are celebrating the past 100 years, and looking forward to what the next 100 years will bring. We are excited to bring together the community to help us celebrate this important milestone.
For the past 100 years this building has been the start of positive change for thousands of local women and children. Programs offered in this building by YWCA-GCR are designed to help women prepare for school and employment through economic advancement programs. It provides affordable, safe and supportive transitional and permanent housing, food security services, homelessness prevention, and advocates for gender and racial equity. We are looking to continue to be a catalyst for positive change in the community for the next 100 years, and every woman who walks through these doors will have the opportunity to experience the support, hope and empowerment that YWCA-GCR brings to our community.
As part of the yearlong Centennial Celebration of our building, YWCA-GCR is asking members of the community to accept the Centennial 100 Challenge. By accepting this challenge, individuals, businesses and organizations will be a part of helping to ensure that women and women with children will continue have this building and all of the services and programs offered by YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, as a beacon of HOPE and positive change for the next 100 years.
