April 25, 2024YWCA NENY Hosts Candlelight Vigil in Memorial of Crime Victims
In observance of Crime Victims’ Rights Week, YWCA NorthEastern NY, and The Parents of Murdered Children & Other Survivors (POMC) hosted a poignant candlelight vigil, “Hear Our Voices, Heal Our Hearts,” yesterday evening. Held at YWCA NENY, 44 Washington Ave in Schenectady, the event provided a solemn space for community members to honor and remember those affected by violence.
During the vigil, attendees gathered to reflect on the lives lost and the impact of crime on individuals and families. Through candlelight and shared moments of silence, the community stood in solidarity, offering support and comfort to survivors and those grieving loss.
The event commenced with a heartfelt invocation by Kathy Gorman-Coombs, followed by welcoming remarks from Tina Mazzucco representing POMC, and Wendi Gapczynski from YWCA. Distinguished speakers included Sgt. Nick Mannix, standing in for Mayor McCarthy, and Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, who delivered proclamations reaffirming the city and district’s dedication to preventing violence within our communities. Senator Jim Tedisco delivered a stirring address on the imperative nature of prevention efforts and the progress achieved during and beyond Crime Victims Rights Week. The event also featured an open mic session where attendees shared poignant stories, underscoring the significance of community support. Concluding the evening, Josh of the local band Twenty Ninety-Six (2096) performed a rendition of Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers,” leaving attendees with a sense of hope and unity.
