Welding Students Take Honors at SUNY Cobleskill Competition

A pair of Capital Region BOCES welding students took top honors at the annual Ag High school Day at SUNY Cobleskill.

Dahkeya King placed first and classmate Connor Fancher placed third in the welding competition conducted Sept. 28 at the college. Both Cobleskill-Richmondville High School seniors attend the BOCES Career and Technical Education welding program at the Center for Advanced Technology at Mohonasen.

To earn top honors against competitors from across the state, King and Fancher showed an excellent capability to perform two welds — a shielded metal arc butt joint and a shielded metal arc “T” joint. The seniors also showed an expertise during a written test of their general welding knowledge.

“They did an excellent job. We are really proud of them,” said teacher Chris Panny.

More than 1,000 students participated in the college’s 13th annual Ag High School Day competition. In addition to welding challenges, there were a number of other competitions ranging from equipment operations to plant identification students competed in.

Other welding students from BOCES competing included:
• James Porath, adult student.
• Nick Pruiksma, Cobleskill-Richmondville
• Seth Lawyer, Schoharie
• Dylan Park, Niskayuna
• Gabe Shaver, Guilderland
• Dominick Snyder, Schoharie

The students are among approximately five dozen students in the welding program run by Capital Region BOCES on the Albany and Mohonasen campuses. Those students learn American Welding Society standards and earn certifications that prepare them for a career in the welding industry.
