Washington Park Tulips in Full Bloom

Mayor Kathy Sheehan, the City of Albany and The Department of General Services invite residents of the Capital Region to view the Washington Park tulip beds as they reach their peak. While the city gardening crew plants over 140,000 tulips strategically timed to bloom during the annual Albany Tulip Festival on Mother’s Day weekend, this year’s weather has dramatically sped up the flowers’ growth.

“We’ve been blessed with an early spring this year and with an early spring comes early tulips,” said City Gardener Jessica Morgan.  “We encourage everyone to visit Washington Park to enjoy the beautiful tulips in full bloom.” While some late-blooming tulips may be seen during this year’s Tulip Festival, Morgan advises that the best time to see the flowers is this week.

“Traditionally, residents are able to appreciate the beautiful tulips in Washington Park during Tulip Fest, however, this year’s warm weather has resulted in early blooming,”  said Mayor Kathy Sheehan.  “I want to urge you to visit the park within the next week and enjoy the efforts of Jessica Morgan and her staff.”

Even though the tulips are blooming now, the Capital Region can still look forward to a great Tulip Festival!   A Mother’s Day weekend tradition for 69 years, the annual Albany Tulip Festival will be held May 13 & 14. The free festival in Albany’s historic Washington Park will feature two stages of acclaimed live music, a nationally-renowned craft show, a fine arts exhibition, the Kid Zone family fun destination, a wide variety of food vendors, the 19th annual Mother of the Year award and the coronation of Albany’s 69th Tulip Queen.  For more information, call 518.434.2032, visit www.albanyevents.org or follow albanyNYevents on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.
