Volleyball Coasts to 10th MAAC Win at Quinnipiac

MAAC Rookie of the Week Darby Taylor killed nine of her first 11 attacks, and finished with a match-high 10 kills to lead Siena past Quinnipiac 3-0 (25-10, 25-13 and 25-22) Wednesday night in Hamden, Conn. The victory gave Siena a rare three-game team sweep of the Bobcats, with women’s soccer (2-1) and men’s soccer (1-0) earning victories earlier today.

It was Siena’s (14-8, 10-2) sixth straight win and third straight sweep.

Taylor’s first nine kills came in the first two sets helping Siena to blowout 25-10 and 25-13 wins. Quinnipiac rebounded in a competitive 25-22 third set before giving way late.

Erin Bies (3) and Kalehua Katagiri (2) combined for five aces as Siena’s service gave Quinnipiac trouble all evening.

Sonja Vasovic had a stellar match with nine kills in 17 attacks on the right side with just one error, and Christina Monroe was on fire in the middle with seven kills in nine tries. Siena hit a season-best .407 for the match behind Vasovic and Monroe, compared to Quinnipiac’s .085 performance.

The Saints held a 41-27 advantage in kills, an 8-1 edge in aces, and a 10-4 margin in blocks. Samantha Pethokoukis was in on five of those blocks to go along with her six kills.

MAAC Player of the Week Haley Howell had 34 of the Saints’ 28 assists.

Siena returns to action in a key MAAC match at Manhattan Saturday.
