Urban Grow Center Mural Project Community Installation Day

Capital Roots (formerly Capital District Community Gardens) invites the community to the Urban Grow Center in Troy to install a 400 square foot mosaic mural depicting a cityscape bursting with fresh fruit and vegetables on Saturday, August 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A project of local artist Jillian Hirsch, the mural will be installed by hundreds of community members and will be the culmination of nearly four months of outreach work in Capital Region communities.

A portion of the tiles were hand crafted by Capital Region residents at tile making workshops held in Albany, Schenectady and Troy. The remaining tile and mirror used in the mural were sourced from Northeast Ceramic Supply, Quality Glass, Laguna Clay Co., the Sanctuary for Independent Media, and other local businesses. The community event will include music and a barbeque provided by Albany Society for the Advancement of Philanthropy, Denison Farm, Honest Weight Food Coop, Fresh Market of Latham, and other local businesses.

At 11:30 a.m., the Capital Roots staff will join with members of the Stock family to place a memorial tile on the mural in memory of Amy Stock, a beloved member of Capital Roots’ staff who passed away in July.
