UAlbany Hosts Weather & Climate Day Camp for Local Urban Teens, August 10-14

University at Albany Weather & Climate Camp is a week-long day camp for teens currently in grades 9-11 from Schenectady, Albany, Troy, Watervliet and Rensselaer. With guidance from UAlbany atmospheric scientists, campers will interpret images from weather satellites and radar, learn about weather analysis and forecasting, launch a weather balloon, create “weather” in a rotating tank, and gain an understanding of the causes and consequences of climate change.

Includes a field trip to the Atmospheric Sciences Research Center’s Whiteface Mountain weather observatory in the Adirondacks, and the National Weather Service’s Albany forecast office.

This event is hosted by the University at Albany’s Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, the camp was created by Assistant Professor Justin Minder with a five-year grant from the National Science Foundation’s Faculty Early Career Development Program. It will take place at the University at Albany main campus at 1400 Washington Ave in Albany.

The schedule is as follows:

Monday-Friday, August 10 – 14, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. daily

Wednesday, August 12 – Late afternoon visit to the National Weather Service

Thursday, August 13 – 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Whiteface Mountain Observatory field trip
