June 26, 2024Two Capital Region BOCES Students to Represent NYS at National Competition in Atlanta
A pair of New York state champions from Capital Region BOCES are on their way to Atlanta this week to represent the region and state at the national SkillsUSA competition.
Jacob Alaimo, a Cosmetology senior from the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk (RCS) Central School District, and Liam Pierce, a Network Technology senior from Niskayuna Central School District, won their respective job-skill competitions last month at the state SkillsUSA competition in Syracuse. To do so, they beat out dozens of other students from all over New York vying to be the best in the state.
They will now compete against the best from the rest of the United States.
“I am looking forward to seeing what I can do and seeing how good I really am,” said Alaimo, who is competing in barbering.
“I am not going [to Atlanta] expecting to win, but I am going to give it my best shot,” added Pierce, who is competing in the internet of things competition that tests his knowledge and abilities in network technology, wiring and assorted similar skills.
Approximately 6,000 students from across the United States will compete in 115 skilled and leadership competitions during the June 24-28 competition in Atlanta.
“It’s going to be really fun to meet new people, network and see for real how good I am,” said Alaimo.
Pierce said no matter the results, the work and experience is worth it.
“Saying I am state champion and went on to nationals is unbelievable. It might help me get me a job in the future,” the Niskayuna teen said.
