All Treats, No Tricks

victor-smallerHalloween delights await you at Proctors Theater on Sunday, October 30 at 3 p.m, when the Schenectady Symphony Orchestra opens its 2016-17 season with a “Trick or Treat” program:

Night on Bald Mountain ~ Modest Mussorgsky, arr. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov
Danse Macabre  ~ Camille Saint-Saëns
Concerto #1 for Horn ~ Richard Strauss
Soloist, Victor Sungarian
Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater  ~ Robert McBride
Funeral March of a Marionette ~ Charles Gounod
Sorcerer’s Apprentice ~ Paul Dukas

As a special treat, children under 18 are admitted free thanks to a grant from Price Chopper. For this concert, kids are invited to come in costume!

“I’ve been looking through my closet for my costume,” jokes Robert Bour, Schenectady Symphony Board President.  “I’ve appeared as Lincoln to narrate Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, but that was a long time ago!”

“We believe classical music is for the ages – all ages, in all seasons,” Bour added.  “That’s why we are excited for our 83rd season of providing live classical music, which features talented local musicians as soloists, including members of the Niskayuna High School Choral Program in January, Clifton Park high school student Rachel Sohn in April, and our own principal horn player Victor Sungarian on October 30.”

Sungarian juggles performing with SSO and musical groups throughout the Capital Region with teaching at Williams College and the College of Saint Rose and coaching the horn sections of the Empire State Youth Orchestra. He performs with the Albany Symphony, Albany Pro-Musica, Musicians of Ma’alwyck, Glimmerglass Opera, the Catskill Symphony and many other local groups.

To heighten patrons’ appreciation of the music, the SSO offers a pre-concert Talk by Music Director Charles Schneider at 2 p.m. in the Fenimore Gallery on the second floor of Proctors. The talk is free to ticketholders, no reservations required.

Tickets for children and students 18 and under are free.  Adult tickets are $12 in Regular Seating/$20 in Preferred Seating, less for season subscribers.  Contact Proctors Theater Box Office, 432 State Street, Schenectady, 518-346-6204, www.proctors.org.
