Though Love May Wilt, These Roses Never Will

These students are far from budding florists, but they are putting together bouquets of roses that will never wilt or die and that promise to withstand the test of time.

Capital Region BOCES Welding and Metal Fabrication students fabricated the steel roses from scratch and sold them for $15 in time for Valentine’s Day. All of the proceeds of the sale will be used to offset the costs of students competing in the New York State SkillsUSA competition in April in Syracuse.

“The students are getting into the project,” said teaching assistant Karen Scanlon-Fish.

“It’s a fun way to test our skills and use our creativity,” said Tom Hildreth, a junior from Niskayuna as he polished a rose petal.

“It’s challenging, but fun,” added Ryan Teetsel of Mohonasen.

Teacher Chris Panny said the project tests the students on a multitude of levels while benefitting a good cause.

SkillsUSA is a national organization for career and technical education students that promotes personal and professional growth and offers them the opportunity to compete at the local, regional, state and national levels. Students who place among the top finishers at a March 18 regional competition will advance to the New York State SkillsUSA competition that is held over multiple days each April in Syracuse. Capital Region BOCES traditionally sends up to 60 students to the state competition.
