Theatre Institute at Sage presents Lois Lowry’s The Giver

The Theatre Institute at Sage continues its 2017-2018 season with The Giver, Lois Lowry’s vision of a strange future where Sameness reigns and memories of a past world are contraband. Adapted for the stage by Eric Coble, and directed by David Bunce.

In Jonas’ world, there is no war, fear or pain. There are also no choices. At age twelve, he is assigned to work with the “Giver” and receive all the memories of real pain and real joy. Now Jonas will learn the truth about life — and the hypocrisy of his utopian world. Can Jonas and the Giver unite to change their world forever?

This production features not only Sage students, but also experienced local actors like Joe Quandt (the Giver) and Cullen Sausville (Jonas). Sausville attends the Christian Brothers Academy and has performed in shows like Shrek, Suessical, and The Wizard of Oz. He is also an active member of Debuts Theatre Company in Albany, NY. Quandt, a veteran of NYSTI, is known for his roles in A Christmas Carol, Number the Stars, and Idiot’s Delight.

Established in February of 2011, the Theatre Institute at Sage is dedicated to providing quality live theatre and arts-in-education programming to Capital Region youth, educators and residents. The Institute also provides opportunities for Russell Sage students as performers, technicians and teachers. Programs include educational support services for Sage productions (such as in-class preparations, teacher dress rehearsals and study guides), a Saturday theatre arts school, camps during school breaks, and several theatre camps during the summer for children ages 5-18.
