Theatre Institute at Sage presents Nina Raine’s Tribes.

The Theatre Institute at Sage continues its 2017-2018 season with Tribes, Nina Raine’s award-winning play, directed by David Baecker.

Billy was born deaf into a hearing family. He has adapted brilliantly to their unconventional ways, but they’ve never bothered to return the favor. It’s not until he meets Sylvia, a young woman on the brink of deafness, that he finally understands what it means to be heard. Ben Brantley of the New York Times called Tribes “A smart [and] lively…new play that asks us to hear how we hear, in silence as well as in speech.”

Tribes features guest artist Joey Ausanio, as well as TIS artists-in-residence David Bunce and Leigh Strimbeck, along with Sage students Camryn Beck, Mitchell Johnson, and Francesca Volpe. Mr. Ausanio has appeared in two other productions of Tribes and is a Los Angeles-based screenwriter working on several projects, including entertainment news for DPAN.tv, a channel that makes news accessible for deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences. David Bunce teaches stage combat and acting at the Theatre Institute; his new play Red Maple will be produced by Capital Repertory Theatre next year. Leigh Strimbeck is Artistic Director at TIS with many directing and acting credits to her name; she also co-founded WAM Theatre Company.

This production is generously sponsored by CDPHP.

Tribes is also being supported by local sign language interpreters who have been working together to give interpreted performances for the Theatre Institute at Sage, in cooperation with The Independent Living Center of the Hudson Valley. They will be working closely with the production to provide interpreters for rehearsals, as well as a deaf coach to administer sign language instruction to the cast.

There will be a talkback after the performance on April 22 with Karen Garofallou, ASL interpreter, and Mr. Ausanio.

April 22 will be an ASL-interpreted performance.

Tribes is recommended for ages 14 and up.
