The Theatre Institute at Sage ends its 2017-2018 season with the award-winning Backbeard: The Musical, based on local children’s book author and Sage College of Albany Professor, Matthew McElligott’s books Backbeard and the Birthday Suite and Backbeard: Pirate for Hire. Book and lyrics by Matthew McElligott and Larry Tuxbury and music and lyrics by Russell Sage College Professor Michael Musial. Additional book credit to Russell Sage Alum Brian Sheldon.
Backbeard: The Musical was named a Grand Jury Selection of the New York Musical Festival’s Next Link Project and was staged in New York City in August 2017 at The Acorn Theatre at Theatre Row. It was awarded a special Theatre for Young Audiences citation from the New York Musical Festival.
Backbeard: The Musical tells the story of Backbeard, the hairiest, toughest pirate ever. Following a particularly rowdy birthday party, even he admits that he’s a mess and that it’s time for new duds. The clothing store doesn’t have pirate gear, but it does have a straw boater, colorfully patterned trousers, a coat, and a pig – not the look Backbeard expected, though one that brings both surprises and delights.
Established in February of 2011, the Theatre Institute at Sage is dedicated to providing quality live theatre and arts-in-education programming to Capital Region youth, educators and residents. The Institute also provides opportunities for Russell Sage students as performers, technicians and teachers. Programs include educational support services for Sage productions (such as in-class preparations, teacher in-services and study guides), a Saturday theatre arts school, camps during school breaks, and several theatre camps during the summer for children ages 5-18.
