The University at Albany Appoints Dean of the School of Business

Nilanjan Sen begins this August

The University has appointed Nilanjan Sen to serve as the next dean of the School of Business beginning this August.

Sen, PhD, CFA, comes from Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, where he served as the associate dean of graduate studies and an associate professor of banking and finance.

Sen also served as director of the Berkeley-Nanyang Advanced Management Program and academic director of India Desk at Nanyang Business School.

University President Havidán Rodríguez said Sen’s robust experience in both industry and academia will be a tremendous asset to UAlbany’s academic and research enterprises.

“Dr. Sen brings to us a proven track record as a senior academic leader in one of the top business schools in the world,” President Rodríguez said. “I’m confident that UAlbany’s School of Business will thrive under his leadership as we prepare the next generation of innovative, globally engaged business leaders.”

Sen’s work encompasses mergers, acquisitions and other areas of international corporate finance. In addition to holding teaching positions in the United States and Singapore, Sen has taught in China, Italy, India, Ireland, Norway, Spain and Switzerland.

He earned a master’s in economics and a PhD in finance at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Sen previously was a tenured faculty member at Arizona State University, where he received the Researcher of the Year Award from the School of Global Management and Leadership.

Sen has conducted training programs for corporations, banks and government agencies, and he was the chief examiner for Certified Investment and Security Analyst Institute (CISA) in Thailand for three years. To launch advanced management programs, he has worked with several leading U.S. universities, including Wharton, Cornell, Berkeley and Georgetown McDonough.

Sen’s work has been published extensively in academic and practitioner journals such as the Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Business, Finance and Accounting and Applied Economic Letters.

Sen’s broad range of expertise will bolster the School’s undergraduate and graduate education programs, Provost James Stellar said, as well as further positioning the University as a leader in competitive research and innovation.

“Sen’s background and breadth of knowledge with international programs, combined with his management skills, shows a commitment to excellence in education and global engagement that perfectly aligns with the University’s goals and priorities,” Stellar said. “We look forward to collaborating with him in leading the School of Business forward and in building the momentum at the University.”

In addition to his appointment as dean, Sen will serve as a professor of finance.
