The Eyes Have It With New Equipment at Center Health Care

Center Health Care has acquired a Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screener which rapidly scans for vision issues and a RetinaVue camera for use on its patients who have diabetes.

The Spot Vision Screener has point and shoot technology and completes a vision screening within seconds. This alternative to traditional acuity testing is especially useful for young children and for people who have developmental disabilities. It detects six different visual impairments and risk factors in patients as young as 6 months of age.

The RetinaVue camera helps identify patients most at risk for diabetic retinopathy and increases the likelihood of vision saving intervention. Its use involves uploading the screen to an ophthalmologist, who will interpret the results within 90 minutes. It provides point-of-care screening for patients with diabetes and enables physicians to promptly adjust medication and educate patients.

Medical research indicates visual disability is pervasive among children with 25 percent of school age students having some type of visual disorder. Individuals with an intellectual disability are at a higher risk of developing vision problems. Eyesight is a important component of communication and learning and it is vital to the development of communication skills and independence.

Center Health Care, located at 314 South Manning Boulevard, Albany, offers Primary Care, Specialty Medical, Dental, Behavioral Health and Outpatient Therapy services to new and established patients in one easy-to-access location. It provides Optometry services for eye exams, diagnosis and treatment. With hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., most work, school, family and personal schedules may be accommodated. Community members are welcome and specialized services are offered for individuals with disabilities and their families. Medicaid, Medicare and most private insurances are accepted.
