February 18, 2021The 4th Annual Ballston Spa Birdhouse Competition
Here in Ballston Spa, we know it’s still snowing and we may have six more weeks of winter, but we’re getting ready for spring by decorating birdhouses for the 4th Annual Ballston Spa Birdhouse Competition. The theme this year is “Ballston Spa is Home.” We have an incredibly rich history and we are working hard to make it a better future for our children.
“COVID has not slowed us down one bit,’ says Mark Blech, community organizer of this event. “We’re following the guidelines and making sure everything is being handled in a safe and no contact manner, but we are determined to keep this favorite village program up and running,”
Like every year, there are two categories of birdhouses to enter. The first is the “build from scratch” category, where individual or families create a birdhouse from materials they have around the house.” Over the years, entries have been wild and amazing creations.
“We’ve had birdhouses carved into faces, ones to look like cats and Lincoln Log creations; what people have come up with is always amazing,” notes Blech.
The second category involves picking up a pre-made birdhouse and decorating it anyway you want. Paint, glue, glitter, popsicle sticks, buttons etc., are all fair game in making these birdhouses your own expression. There are no age limits and it’s open to everyone. All birdhouses need to be returned before April 1st. This is a FREE program. You can pick up a free pre made birdhouse by contacting Mark Blech at marklouisco@gmail.com. You don’t have to be a Ballston Spa resident. Once you request a birdhouse, your name will be written on the back of the birdhouse and placed on a table outside. The birdhouse will stay there, untouched, until you pick it up.
This program is made possible by the generous donation of Curtis Lumber and the village of Ballston Spa.
