June 20, 2017Summer Reading Kicks Off June 24 at Albany Public Library
School is (almost) out and summer reading is in at Albany Public Library (APL). From June 24 to Aug. 19, APL encourages kids and teens to read by providing prizes and special activities.
Librarians and educators have long encouraged kids to read every day during the summer, even if it’s just for 10 minutes a day. Students who read over those long summer months are less likely to fall behind when school starts up again in September.
Close to 100 special activities and events are scheduled during the eight-week Summer Reading Program across the city’s library branches. There are also more than 100 regular storytimes and game programs available in July and August. Participants register and record their reading in person at any Albany library. This year’s summer reading theme is “Build a Better World.” The 2017 APL Summer Reading Program is sponsored by the Friends of Albany Public Library, Price Chopper and Market 32, and Stewart’s Shops.
Bleecker—the library’s owl mascot—will visit several Albany elementary schools this week to share the importance of summer reading and take photos with students outside during dismissal time. (In the case of inclement weather, Bleecker will meet kids at the nearest library branch.)
