Week of July 29-Aug. 3 Includes Harry Potter, Firefighter Storytime, and “Hamiltunes”
Kids and teens converge on Albany Public Library branches every week during the summer for fun and free activities as part of the Summer Reading Challenge. The Summer Reading Challenge encourages youngsters to read, and rewards their efforts, during summer vacation. The challenge also invites kids and teens to visit the library for educational and entertaining activities.
Here are some highlighted activities from this week’s Summer Reading Challenge programs. Details and complete listings are on the library’s online Events Calendar at albanypubliclibrary.org.
Marshmallow Constellations | July 29 (Mon) | 2:00-3:00 pm

Kids explore the stars and make their own marshmallow constellations. For ages 6-11. Drop-in program.
Rocket Egg Racers | July 30 (Tues) | 2:00-3:00 pm
Howe Branch | 105 Schuyler St. | (518) 472-9485
Design and build a wheeled vehicle for an egg, then put those egg racers on a track to see which vehicles can transport their eggs without breaking it. For ages 9-17. Register to attend by calling the branch.
Harry Potter Birthday Celebration | July 31 (Wed) | 3:30-4:30 pm

It’s all about Hogwarts in this Harry Potter birthday party. “New students” will be sorted into houses, create house ties, whip up some slime in potions class, and make wands. They’ll also have a scavenger hunt and enjoy cupcakes. For ages 8-17. Space is limited, so register by calling the branch.
“Hamiltunes: An American Singalong” | Aug. 1 (Thurs) | 6:30-8:00 pm

Fans of the Broadway blockbuster “Hamilton” are invited to take a shot and sing along to songs from the beloved musical. Participants are welcome to come in costume. For all ages. Drop-in program.
Firefighter Storytime | Aug. 3 (Sat) | 10:30-11:30 am

Firefighters from the Albany Fire Department share books, songs, and a craft with young children and their families. The firefighters will also be available for photos. For ages 0-7. Drop-in program.
