STS Steel hosted an American Institute of Steel Construction Day

On September 26, 2023, the Careers in Welding trailer, a 53-foot mobile exhibit presented by the American Welding Society (AWS) Foundation and sponsored by Lincoln Electric, was made available to STS Steel for this event! This is an impressive learning tool that leverages the latest technology to give students a virtual hands-on look at what it’s like to work in the industry. Students met with “The Welder Chick”, Stephanie Hoffman.

Since 2011, the Careers in Welding Trailer has been a driving force for welding education and career development. Every summer it crosses the country to promote welding as a lucrative career choice with limitless possibilities, along with the vast array of industries in which welding is used, the kinds of jobs available, their income potential and opportunities for growth.

Sponsored by Lincoln Electric, the 53-foot single-expandable trailer provided students and visitors the opportunity to try their hand at virtual welding on one of the five VRTEX® 360 Virtual Reality Welding Simulators.

At each stop, the AWS Foundation will award a $1,000 scholarship to the student with the highest score on these virtual welding stations.

Students and visitors had the chance to view exhibits, including examples of welds and their applications, that are designed to engage the senses and spark an interest in the welding industry. The “Metal Maiden”, a five-foot tall metal-art sculpture in the likeness of the Statue of Liberty, created by Stephanie Hoffman and Barbie the Welder, was there for viewers to take selfies and post to their social media channels.

Students and visitors also participated in an interactive structural steel fabrication facility tour, to see first-hand STS Steel’s one-of-a-kind, 62,000-square-foot facility that features a 45-foot-high ceiling and 125-ton lifting capacity. Students engaged with STS Steel staff through various steel fabrication demonstrations highlighting the excitement for and potential of modern manufacturing, fostering interest in manufacturing careers, and expanding their knowledge of the value of manufacturing on our local economy.
