December 20, 2016St. Catherine’s Receives State Grant for Residential Facility Upgrades
New York State announced on December 2 that St. Catherine’s Center for Children has been awarded a grant of $184,153 to complete infrastructure upgrades at the agency’s Copson House residential facility for children. St. Catherine’s is one of 237 applicants statewide to receive a grant from the New York State Nonprofit Infrastructure Capital Investment Program (NICIP). Statewide, $100 million in grants were awarded to nonprofits.
“We are incredibly pleased and grateful to be among the recipients of this infrastructure grant,” said Frank Pindiak, Executive Director of St. Catherine’s Center for Children. “Our Copson House residential facility, home to 25 children, is more than 50 years old, and this grant will allow us to complete some much-needed upgrades to enhance the health, safety and comfort of both children and staff.”
The $100 million in grants are being awarded by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY). Award recipients were chosen through a competitive application process. Applications were received from nonprofits, large and small, from every corner of the state. Applicants were asked how they intended to use the grants, and all applications were evaluated on the scope of proposed projects and how capital investments would benefit clients served by the agency requesting the grant.
“Ultimately, this grant will enable St. Catherine’s to make infrastructure improvements that will create a safer and healthier environment for our children,” said Pindiak. “These children have faced tremendous challenges in their lives, and we know by experience that they are more apt to thrive in a comfortable, therapeutic environment.”
Proposed upgrades at Copson House include installation of safety glass throughout the facility, upgrades in heating and cooling systems, and the installation of camera systems to enhance safety. Improvements are expected to begin this winter, according to Pindiak.
