St. Catherine’s Children Center Opens Michael’s House in Albany

The Chamber was honored to be part of the ribbon cutting for Michael’s House on June 15. The Chamber was joined by many elected officials, Chamber Ambassadors, and local community leaders.

St. Catherine’s Center for Children, a provider of human services in the Capital Region, opened the 20-unit supportive housing apartment complex, which offers stable and affordable housing for vulnerable populations at-risk of becoming homeless.

“We—and our partners at the state and local level—have been working incredibly hard to make this project a reality,” said Frank Pindiak, executive director of St. Catherine’s Center for Children. “This apartment complex will not only provide housing for the region’s most vulnerable persons, but it will also provide support services that will allow tenants to live in dignity and independence.”

Supportive Housing is a stable and affordable housing option that helps qualified individuals and families live independently. St. Catherine’s on-site staff will help tenants connect with vital community support systems and services, including employment and workforce development programs, substance abuse counseling and treatment programs, and childcare services.  Onsite services will include nutrition and parenting classes and other programs that promote health and well-being.

St. Catherine’s supportive housing complex is a true collaboration among state and local entities, according to Pindiak. It was made possible thanks to a $5.6 million grant from New York State’s Homeless and Housing Assistance Corporation, and is funded through the state’s Homeless Housing and Assistance Program. The complex is built on the site of a former senior adult care home, on land donated by Albany County. Contributions from private donors also supported the project.

The new, energy-efficient apartment complex—located at 543 North Pearl Street in Albany—offers furnished apartments and essential appliances, heat and central air, a laundry room and community room, and free internet and off-street parking. It features 12 family apartments, and eight studio apartments for single adults.

All ribbon cuttings are sponsored by Saratoga National Bank and Trust Company.
