Sponsor-A-Scholar Welcomes 42 New Mentors

Capital Region Sponsor-A-Scholar recently welcomed 45 mentors who will provide guidance and support for local college-bound students enrolled in the college success program.

Robin Christenson, executive director, highlighted the importance of this accomplishment: “This year we welcomed our largest class of new mentors, matching every student with a mentor by the end of January, a record for the program. We are deeply grateful to our many community partners, including CDPHP, Merit, and SUNY that connected us to employees who have chosen to invest their time and energy in our Scholars.”

Sponsor-A-Scholar is currently recruiting mentors for students entering the program in the fall of 2017. Mentors are college-educated professionals who are screened, trained and matched with an individual Scholar in the student’s sophomore year of high school. Mentors commit to their student through, at least, the critical first year of college. Sponsor-A-Scholar provides ongoing guidance and support to both the student and the mentor throughout this time.

Capital Region Sponsor-A-Scholar works with promising, underserved high school and college students from Albany, Schenectady and Troy, N.Y. Sponsor-A-Scholar provides college preparation for selected students through tutoring, mentoring and financial assistance. Once in college, Scholars receive a stipend that helps to defray the cost of their education. Sponsor-A-Scholar’s students currently achieve a 98% high school graduation rate and a 68% college graduation rate. More than 215 of our Scholars have earned college degrees. For more information about Sponsor-A-Scholar’s programs and accomplished alumni, visit www.crsas.org.
